History
One of the finest remaining examples of Madison's industrial past, the six-story Das Kronenberg building was originally constructed for the Badger State Shoe Company as a factory. Built in 1910, and designed by noted Madison architect Ferdinand Kronenberg, the factory employed 250 people and produced over 2000 pairs of shoes daily at peak production. The factory closed in 1930 and the building became a warehouse for nearly 60 years. In 1989, the Alexander Company converted the warehouse into luxury apartments and named the building Das Kronenberg after its respected architect. That year, the building gained its designation as a landmark by the National Register of Historic Places.
Today
In 2004, the building was converted into 43 condominium units ranging in size from one to three bedrooms. The residents of Das Kronenberg are a diverse group of friends and families, couples and singles.
Set in a prime downtown location, just six blocks from the Capitol Square, Das Kronenberg is a short walk from James Madison Park, State Street, and Williamson Street. The quiet neighborhood has everything you need, including some of Madison's best restaurants located on the Square. Shopping, grocery stores, banks, dry cleaners and more are all minutes from Das Kronenberg.
